Moving is stressful! To help you get through this as easy as possible, we've curated a list of steps that will keep you organized during your move.

4 weeks before the move

Select a moving company or reserve a truck

  • Make preparations for moving company or rental truck.

Plan your route

  • If you are moving cross country or long distance, begin planning your route, including booking hotels along the way.

Plan & Organize

  • Set up a moving folder or binder for documents, receipts, etc.

  • Create a moving budget, including costs for the move, new utility setup, and potential deposits.

Organize school records

  • If you have children, contact the new school district and gather information on the new school.  Arrange to have their records transferred after the move.

  • Don’t forget about shot records or other physical exams needed for admission into schools.

Notify important parties

  • Provide your current landlord with a move-out notice if required.

  • Update your address with the post office for mail forwarding.

  • Notify your utility companies (electricity, water, gas) about the disconnection date at your current address.

Start packing

  • Begin packing non-essential items such as seasonal clothing, books, and decorations.

  • Label boxes with contents and intended rooms for easier unpacking.

Get rid of items you don't want

  • Host a yard/garage sale or place items you no longer want for sale online. Donate anything that’s left over.

Update your insurance

  • Notify your rental insurance company about your move.

2-3 weeks before the move

Continue packing

  • Pack less-frequently used items.

Plan for pets

  • Arrange for pet transportation or boarding if necessary.

Meal prep

  • For the final two weeks, plan meals and use any remaining items in your refrigerator and freezer that will not travel well.

Think of the little ones

  • Schedule a play date or day care for children or pets for your move day.

Moving Week

Finish packing

  • Pack up all remaining items except daily essentials.

  • Pack an essentials box with items you’ll need immediately upon arrival (e.g., toiletries, a few days’ worth of clothes, basic kitchen items).

Donate any food you won’t be taking with you

Clean your current home
